The bird at right is an Osprey, the only diving
raptor of North America. A few decades ago, the Osprey was on the brink of
extinction due to the effects of the pesticide, DDT, on the species reproductive
success. Intensive conservation measures, as well as the banning of DDT usage,
has resulted in one of the most celebrated success stories in the conservation
movement of this country - the reestablishment of the Osprey population.
