Lady Slipper
Cypripedium acaule

Photos taken June 7, 2006, Wenham, MA.

The Lady Slipper is one of just a few species of the orchid family that are native to Massachusetts. They flower in early Summer, and occationally one may see pockets of many individuals. Although an individual plant may live 10 - 15+ years, they are very difficult to grow and seed; hence, the species is protected.

Unique to this image is the first white Lady Slipper I have seen in 30 years of observing our local woods; a rare genetic variant.
